Pedersen & Pedersen, Inc. provided complete surveying services for the preliminary engineering phase of the replacement of Second Avenue Bridge over Nine Mile Run. All survey work was performed in accordance with PennDOT Publication 122M.
P&P’s responsibilities included contacting PA One Call service to have utilities marked in the field; research of property deeds and right-of-way information at Allegheny County Courthouse for our preparation of a property mosaic for preliminary right-of-way activities; location of flagged wetlands and limits of environmental features; and topographic and stream surveys.
Survey control was established at the site utilizing high-precision GPS equipment. P&P then performed a complete topographic survey of the proposed new bridge alignment area, locating topographic features including visible and marked utilities; found property evidence; centerline and edges of existing roadways; locations and profiles of side roads and private drives; existing buildings, signs, and guiderails; fence, tree, and brush lines; and the location and elevation of existing drainage features including pipes, culverts, and swales. P&P also performed an H&H survey of the stream, surveying fourteen cross sections that located the top and bottom of banks, stream edges, thalwag, and 100 feet beyond the top of the bank.
Utilizing data from our field surveys, we prepared base mapping detailing existing site conditions including topography, utilities, and property lines in MicroStation format for AECOM’s use in design activities.
